Bilingual Program FAQ

Research consistently shows that students in bilingual programs match or outperform their monolingual peers in English literacy and mathematics. Bilingualism enhances cognitive skills such as problem-solving, cognitive flexibility, and critical thinking. Studies also link bilingual learning to improved working memory, attention control, and even stronger academic achievement across a range of subjects. 

Participating in the Bilingual Program helps students: 

• Achieve advanced biliteracy—equal comfort and proficiency in reading and writing in both English and Chinese

All bilingual instruction at Plympton International College is closely aligned with the Australian Curriculum standards. Australian content and assessment, particularly in subjects like H&PE, The Arts, and HASS, remains central, while Chinese language is introduced to complement—not replace—English learning. Mathematics and Science courses are delivered in English, with selective use of Chinese to reinforce key concepts and support language acquisition. 

Evidence shows that bilingual learning not only does not slow students’ progress in English—it can enhance English literacy by strengthening students’ understanding of grammar, vocabulary, and linguistic structure. Regular formative and summative assessment ensure learners in the bilingual stream meet or exceed curriculum standards and milestones. 

There is no disadvantage for bilingual learners in meeting SACE or higher education entry requirements. Instead, the program allows students in senior years to tailor their language pathway to their proficiency and goals, such as Chinese Continuers or Chinese Background for SACE credits. This flexible approach, supported by regular monitoring, enables academic success in both English and Chinese, deepening students’ overall linguistic, cultural, and global competencies. 

The Bilingual Program at Plympton International College integrates Australian history, Indigenous culture, and fundamental values such as fairness, democracy, respect, and inclusion throughout the curriculum.  

Acknowledgement of Country and education about local Indigenous knowledge are embedded in school life, reinforcing a commitment to recognising and respecting our shared history.
