Chinese Bilingual Education

In 2017, Plympton International College became the very first Bilingual School in South Australia.

Students have the unique opportunity to become fluent in the Chinese language, one of the most spoken languages in the world. Students have both a class teacher and a Chinese bilingual teacher who teaches Chinese through practical activities in the subjects of Health & Physical Education (H&PE) and Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS). A daily lesson in Chinese prepares students in Reception to Year 2 for the bilingual program.

Plympton International College is a lighthouse school for Chinese language learning and teaching, supported by UniSA and the Department for Education.

Bilingual education offers many benefits. By learning and enjoying a high proficiency in Chinese, students benefit from an excellent educational experience that will give them an edge in an increasingly competitive job market.

The benefits of bilingual education

Plympton International College is proud to provide an authentic bilingual English and Chinese education of the highest standard. Our mission is to prepare our students for their future, to be critical thinkers, innovators and leaders in an ever-changing world.

The benefits of learning another language are well established:

  • Improved brain development, cognitive flexibility and, enhanced problem-solving
  • The ability to communicate with an even great number of people, both personally and professionally
  • Broader career opportunities; a second language gives job candidates an edge.
  • A greater appreciation and understanding of Chinese culture.
  • Improved English literacy.
  • Learning another language requires students to use different ‘systems’ within the brain. This causes them to compare and contrast Chinese language with
  • English, providing them with an insight into how English works, and enhancing their ability to read and write.
  • Improved Mathematics skills. There is a scientific correlation between learning Chinese and an enhanced mathematical ability.
